Step 3: How to install a garage door
Step by step instructions on taking door measurements. Please note that our Garaga Experts dealers would gladly assist you in taking the measurement at your home if you want to.
How to measure
Never base your measurements on the size of the existing door but on the door opening instead.
Required rear clearance for the door: h+ 24" (610 mm) (h = height of the door)
Minimum space between the door jamb and wall: 6" (152 mm)
Minimum space between two doors installed side by side: 12" (305 mm)
Standard 8 1/2"
|Spring||Opens with an opener|
Standard 10 1/2"
Torsion springs are recommended for better operation and safety measures.
Getting the opening ready
Make sure that the size of the opening matches the size of the door. For example: a door of 9' X 7' (2743 X 2134 mm) needs an opening of 9' (2,743 mm) wide by 7' (2,134 mm) high.
The position of the header and back jambs are very important. The header must be flush (on the same plane) with back jambs. The back jambs must be perpendicular, plumb, and square.
Check headroom and rear clearance of the door so as to have enough room for the door to work properly
The installation of your garage door
There are two possibilities to choose from:
- Installing the door yourself and consulting the Garaga Installation Manual included in the box.
- Or Having the door installed by a Garaga authorized dealer. You can be assured that the installation will give you peace of mind: your door will be balanced properly; the air tightness and closing mechanism will be optimized to prevent any friction.
Garaga authorized dealers can provide complete turnkey service that includes accurate door measurement and door install. They can also provide additional services like removal and haul away of your old door as well as frame capping.
