Our Automation Engineer Key Characteristics and Abilities:

  • Support the production team by ensuring all safety devices meet regulations and are up to date.
  • Participate in the development of designs for automated and semi-automated equipment by using a variety of 2D & 3D software (AutoCad, Solidworks, and more)
  • Produce and update various drawings: Parts, assembly, layout or bills.
  • Research and document trends in engineering.
  • Manage/Assist in a major role in all engineering team projects and all plant project development.
  • Assist the maintenance/production teams with machine troubleshooting equipment, damaged machinery, or downtime issues.
  • Be responsible for the reverse engineering of old machines, including drawings.
  • Develop solutions to decrease downtime and increase productivity.
  • Coordinate installation of newly designed machines, testing them to ensure they function accurately and efficiently.
  • Innovate and create health and safety accommodations.
  • Create new prototypes for new projects and produce parts for prototypes.
  • Collaborate in research and development of new manufacturing processes for future integration locally or globally in all Garaga facilities.
  • Develop/Innovate new manufacturing processes.
  • Design or specify manufacturing equipment to be built by specialized machine integrators, machine shops or local maintenance and engineering teams.
  • Knowledge of CSA Z432-16; CSA Z434-14 and other relevant Safety Standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Automation Engineer Profile we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or mechatronics discipline and PLC programming.
  • Experience of 5 to 8 years with automation PLC/PAC, robot, and other programming software, (Rockwell Studio 5000, Omron CX Programmer, NI LabVIEW, FANUC robot software, ABB Robot Studio).
  • Ability to read, write and design electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic drawings.
  • Ability to select and integrate full spectrum of mechatronics controls technology, pneumatics, hydraulics, AC drives, servomotors, etc.
  • Knowledge of CSA Z432-16; CSA Z434-14 and other relevant Safety Standards.
  • Knowledge and experience with industrial sensing technologies (photo sensors, inductive proximity sensors, ultrasonic sensors, vision cameras, etc.).
  • Knowledge and experience using and troubleshooting industrial networking and communication protocols (Ethernet IP, Modbus TCP, etc.).
  • Knowledge of industrial systems architectures, PLC, SCADA, QMS, MES, ERP and how they interact with each other.
  • Orientation towards a continuous improvement culture.
  • Advanced knowledge of systems, tools, and solutions for productivity.
  • Understanding of technical documentation, industrial blueprints and plans.
  • Critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity skills.
  • Ability to determine how operations, environments, and systems interact.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
  • Project management experience.
  • Detail-oriented to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • High level of self-motivation and initiative.
  • Good understanding of 5S and other Lean/Six Sigma Manufacturing principles.
