Turning your garage into a playroom

One of our employees had the genius idea of converting her garage into the perfect playroom for her kids. With a 2 year-old son and a little girl on the way, this room has showed to be very practical for her and her husband and also very amusing to her son who could spend hours playing in there. We’ve ask her a few questions about her idea and found out how she managed to do it all.

These answers could help you create a garage playroom area of your own. See how you can do everything in just a few days!

Q: Why choose to create a playroom in your garage?

A: She lives right by a boulevard and a busy school street. They have a backyard with a few trees, but whenever her son played sports such as soccer or baseball, he would always lose his ball or would be refrained from playing because of the snow or cold temperatures during winter. She wanted to create a space where her son could play inside, all year round, and most importantly, without damaging anything in the house. The garage is a room with plenty of space and a room that can stay warm all through winter with the help of a quality garage door.

Q: What type of paint did you use on your concrete walls?

A: For concrete walls and floors, she chose Behr premium Concrete & Garage Floor Paint. There are other brands that provide similar products that can be just as good. Contact your hardware or painting store to see the available options.

Q: Does your garage stay warm all through winter?

A: “I have never had any issues with cold temperatures. My garage door is a Cambridge with a thermal resistance of R-16, which is very great! It has a high insulation level and it keeps my garage warm all winter. But if for some reason the garage starts to get a little bit colder, we have a heating system activate manually.”

Q: Is the garage door opener/remote in reach of your children?

A: She chose to disconnect the garage door opener, this way her children could not open the door. They still have the garage door opener buttons on the walls, but these are out of reach and non-functioning.

Q: Where did you get the accessories for your playroom? (Floor mats, toys…)

A: Storage Space: “Ikea, Ikea, Ikea! They have so many storage space options, for every need and for every rooms. They’re easy to assemble and more affordable then we think!”

Puzzle Floor mats: “These mats are perfect! They are easy to install, very convenient and comfortable for the kids. You can find puzzle floor mats in many places. She founds hers at Walmart, but you can try Home Depot, Toys R Us, Canadian Tires, or online on Amazon.”

Wall Stickers: They come in all shapes and sizes. The stickers in the room were bought at DeSerres, a Canadian Arts and Crafts store where they sell dozens and dozens of them. If you live in the US, you can check at a Michaels or order some online. You’ll find so many beautiful stickers, all of which can brighten your playroom and give it the right feel. Be creative and use your imagination to create a magical room.
